Letters written in 1928

Bertie arrives in Sydney on 29 December with his motorbike and a case of lamps, and goes into digs with Mrs Cadden and sons in Lindfield.  He has to wait a week to see Meta again as she is away on holiday.

He discovers that it's unlkely he'll be able to sell his lamps as there are large companies which form a protectionist ring on accessories.

He also discovers that there are plenty of shock absorbers on the market and he may find it difficult to market those he has imported.

He is soon into the swing of spending weekends with friends at the beach, surfing and picnicing.

On 21 February he writes to his father that he has not yet had any success with selling anything, and "I expect in a week or two to be able to decide whether to go on trying to make the agencies a success or to look for a job." But by the end of February he has a couple of orders to fit the shock absorbers, and has sold some of the lamps, but decided he won't be able to set up an agency for the lamps.

On 19 March he tells his sister that "most of my spare time is spent with Meta at one place or another".

On 3 April there's a reference to Mr Thresher's father coming to Australia 70 or 80 years before, and an uncle visited 40 years ago.

In his letter of 16 April Bertie mentions to his father that he may need to get a job as he "should like to be making money so as to have possibilities of getting married some day in the not too distant future."

By May he is looking for a job and may give up on the shock absorbers which aren't selling well. But then he sells a few more and has to supervise the fitting of them.

May 16 he reports Meta and a friend were hurt in a car accident, luckily not too seriously, but both very shocked.  Meta has recovered by 22 May and they go to a dance.

On 16 June he reports to his mother that he has relinquished the agency with Newtons and will be returning unsold absorbers. There is the possibility of a job with a new company marketing skins which could involve travel to the UK. Meta keen to go with him,

In a letter to Gladys on 25 June regarding her marriage, he says "Meta and I have heaps of plans for our honeymoon"....

His letter of 15 July to his father outlines the terms of a possible job offer from the skins company, which isn't quite what he wants, as no wife could travel with him! On 30 July he tells him mother "I just couldn't leave Australia without her" and explains why...

On 6 August Meta has started her "glory box"

On 21 Aug they have selected the ring "which is to be the token of our engagement" with a drawing and description.

On 12 Sept he describes another possible job with a tyre company but doesn't think it suits him.

In October the skins and wool company are uncertain of their future, but by Nov 6 Bertie has started a job with them travelling in the country selling shares, visiting station owners to persuade them to consign their wool to the new company.  He has bought a car, and is officially engaged to Meta, but won't see so much of her for a bit. She is going away for a month "for her health" with her parents.

On 11 Nov he reports having travelled to Canberra, and again on 25 Nov, but hasn't been able to sell many shares or get orders. He is told by the company to take a compulsory holiday until January as they are retrenching.

On 20 (30?) Nov Meta writes to his mother saying "Bertie is working awfully hard" and thanks her and the family for their good wishes.

On 4 Dec Bertie tells his father that his job is less certain and there's unlikely to be any overseas travel involved for some years. He is going to look for another job and will sell the car.
