Letters written in 1929

2912telegram

The first letter of January describes Christmas and New Year activities, and hints at a new job which may be offered to him if he's thought suitable. His letter of 21 January gives the good news that he is now employed by James Crockett & Co, a timber merchant, to market a new fibre wall board from Canada called Tentest to architects and builders.

Meta's letter of 18 February describes her "glory box" in which she keeps items ready for married life, embroidered cloths etc. She is pleased Bertie has a job and is "now looking splendid and just as full of fun and nonsense as ever".

Bertie's long letter of 25 Feb to his mother covers a range of topics from his job, to garden plants, to possible new suits to order from UK, & whether any of his money from dividends is available,

On 19 March he reports getting a pay rise to £7 per week after 2 months.

2 April first mention of visiting Meta's friends the Avelings in Roseville to play tennis. Much of Easter spent on duty at the Royal Agricultural Society's Show.

His letter of 17 April mentions the timber strike in its 11th week affecting the building trade severely and sales of Tentest.

On 27 May he reports a pay rise to £8 pwk and an end of year bonus of 10% of Tentest sales. He hopes to build a Tentest house with support from Mr Crockett, and he and Meta look for a plot of land.  He wants to realise assets in England and asks his Father to sort out the Power of Attorney.

On 4 June he sends Edna a sketch of the proposed small house they plan. On 10 June he tells his mother they hope to marry in 12 months, and he is negotiating to buy a half acre plot of land in Wahroonga for £4 per foot of frontage.  On 12 August he and Meta and her family visit the land and mark out the frontage and plan where the house is to be built.

16 September letter recounts his birthday picnic with Meta when the car borrowed from work breaks down in the bush. Bertie dismantles the starter

and reassembles it successfully.

On 8 October he describes a holiday weekend trip with the Threshers in 2 cars, as far as Mount Wilson, with magnificent views, and car problems! Later in October he has paid a 2nd instalment on the land, £50, balance outstanding of £87.

Betie's letter of 4 Nov to Edna includes a sketched layout of their proposed cottage. Planning late June wedding. Business fair to average. On 20 Nov mentions friend Vic Boyd, a young barrister, living in Roseville with family.

2 Dec tells his sister he has applied for a Government Savings Bank Loan of £1,000 with land as security. The estimated cost of building the house is £1,127 (see 16 Dec letter). The architect sees the plot and advises on trees to fell. Thinking of names for their house!

On 24 Dec he urges his father to sell his Bonds and Shares and remit any monies to his Australian bank immediately as he needs the money now.

On 30 Dec he describes Christmas Day with the Threshers and a surf at Manly on Boxing Day, a very hot humid day.
