Bertie's diary of his voyage on TSS Demosthenes from Plymouth, Devon to Sydney, NSW was written in pencil on quarto copy paper and referred to in his covering letters as "budget".  It was sent in several instalments to his family from ports of call, the last part finished and sent from Sydney on 23 April 1923. The voyage started on 1 March.
